Some will answer, "for a better ride". It might be a better idea to try and find out what is wrong with the current set up and a lot cheaper. As cars get sold, sometimes even because they ride bad, things get changed. Maybe the car is lowered, by changing springs or taking a leaf out. Did the owner check for clearance issues around exhaust or center section on the differential? Was the shock travel checked? The answer in most cases is "no". All I am saying is take a good look at what you have before spending lots of money. TRUE STORY Met a guy at a car show that was having trouble with his beautiful 57 Chevy making noise when it was loaded or hitting bumps, the car had been on a hoist several times but the problem could not be found, so he had decided a firmer shock was the answer. So I went out to have a look for him. Keep in mind this was the middle of a hot summer day on pavement, after about a minute (having seen this before) I found someone had WELDED shock brace in the rear and there was about 1" of travel before the center section hit the bar! And he had a cheap shock (had to bring that up). I told him to have the bar removed, install a good set of RCD Bilstein shocks and he would want to keep the car. Now comes the best part of my story. His answer was and I quote " the car is for sale ($80k), if it doesn't sell I will give you a call". Never heard from him again..wonder who has the car now? I have talked with owners that have made the change and purchased a kit changing it to a four link coilover setup and said they were happier with the original set up. Part of the reason is most kits don't use a high quality shock due to cost. Typically most four link set ups use small eye loops with poly urethane bushings or heim joints (good for making the rear end tighter) at the pivot points, this provides little or no deflection (give) when hitting a bump. The stock suspension uses large eye loops with rubber bushing which spread the load and allow the spring to move a bit providing a cushion so you won't feel every little bump in the road.
